Wish Guidelines and Restrictions

Understanding the Boundaries of Wish Experiences

While wishes are designed to be joyful and personalized, certain guidelines help ensure the program remains safe, sustainable, and meaningful for every child served.

Some wishes may have logistical limitations depending on travel distance, scheduling availability, or medical considerations. The organization works closely with families and healthcare providers to plan an experience that fits the child’s health needs and circumstances.

These guidelines also help ensure that each child receives one thoughtfully planned wish that can create lasting memories for the family.

Who May Qualify for a Wish

Eligibility Criteria Explained

Families often want to understand the eligibility guidelines before starting a referral. A Special Wish Foundation of Southwest Ohio follows clear criteria designed to ensure wishes reach children facing serious medical challenges while keeping the process straightforward for families and healthcare providers.

Age Range

Children may qualify from birth through age 20. This allows the organization to support both younger children and adolescents facing significant medical conditions.

Medical Diagnosis

A child must have a physician-diagnosed life-threatening illness. Medical verification helps ensure the wish experience is appropriate and meaningful for the child.

Location or Treatment Connection

Children who live within our 20-county Southwest Ohio service area may be eligible for a wish.

Referral Submission

Anyone may submit a referral for consideration. Most commonly, we receive referrals from social workers, doctors, parents, and family members.

What Families Often Ask About Eligibility

Common Questions From Parents and Caregivers

  • Does my child have to be terminally ill to receive a wish?

No. Children do not need to be terminally ill to qualify. Eligibility is based on having a physician-diagnosed life-threatening illness and meeting the age and service-area guidelines.

  • Is there an income requirement for a wish?

No. A Special Wish Foundation does not use income limits when determining eligibility. Families are never required to meet financial thresholds in order for a child to receive a wish.

  • Can a child qualify if they live outside the listed counties?

Yes, in some situations. If you live outside of our service area and think your child might qualify for a wish, please contact us to see if we might be able to help.

  • Will our family have to pay for the wish?

No. Wishes are funded through donations, community fundraising, and in-kind support from partners. Families are not billed for the wish experience.
